Imagination Nation

Nathan was sick yesterday, poor kid. His tummy hurt and wanted to be empty. And he ached and wanted to be snuggled. This was not a bad thing for his mother, who enjoys a good snuggle at least as much as anything else on yesterday's to-do list. It was a little hard for his sister, though, who wanted to be going to the park, to the store, anywhere! She did a great job of playing homebody and ended up going to more places in her imagination than I was likely to take her anyway. In the morning, she put on a white t-shirt (backwards, so Tinker Bell wouldn't show) and tied a red ribbon around her waist and spent a lot of time as a liturgical dancer. Later, she entertained her poor sick brother by donning a tutu "swimsuit" and doing wild jumps into a comforter "lake." There was a sleepover at school that she was in charge of preparing the food and sleeping bags for--you can imagine that such a big responsibility took quite a bit of time! And later, after Nathan was long-gone for the night and she had her parents to herself, she put on a show for us. Yet more costuming was required, and the pillows and blankets for her dollhouse people were pressed into service as makeup applicators as she put on her stage face. Here is the result:

(You will notice that we have definite favorite pieces among our dress-up collection, and no self-respecting costume would be complete without at least a few of them!) The show was mostly twirling. I suspect that the great majority of preparation time went into costuming and anticipation--at least, that's how my childhood shows usually went, since that's the fun part!

For a sick day at home, Rachel did an awesome job of keeping herself busy and the rest of us entertained. Joy to watch!

What a fun day. It's amazing the things that kids can come up with. You're house looks like it's filled with dress up clothes. A fun place to play!
