School, please!

Rachel is obsessed with school.  She plays pretend school and tells me I am the teacher.  She fills bags and baskets with play food for her "school lunch."  She tells Nathan that "When you're bigger, you can walk with Daddy and me to school.  Then, when you're really, really big, you can go to high school!"  (He responds with the same breathless enthusiasm he has whenever Rachel talks to him.  If she is obsessed with all things school, he is similarly obsessed with all things Rachel.)  She was wanting a backpack one day, and I told her about the non-backpack school bag I had in kindergarten and how I would put my arms through the straps because I wanted a backpack, and she started doing the same--with any bag she can find.  One day a few weeks ago, she got to walk with the neighbors to pick up their big brother at the school down the street.  You'd have thought she had been to a rock concert.  She is soooooooooooo excited to go to school next fall.  Now, if only she knew what school is like, so she'd know how to play school, what  to put in her backpacks, and so on.  All in good time, I guess.  For now, she's busy asking things like, "What's chemistry?" and "What's math?"  I hope she's not too disappointed that school won't include a whole lot of either for a while.
